Anyone travelling by rail around Wellington this Labour Weekend needs to plan for a bus journey. Metlink says trains are being replaced across the network from Saturday 24 October to Monday 26 October 2026, including Wairarapa services.

RNZ's 22 October report explains the disruption in terms of KiwiRail's infrastructure work. The regional council's announcement and Metlink's closure page supply the passenger details. The notices agree on the three-day closure; they are not competing accounts of its cause.

The dates and the boarding point

Rail replacement services follow normal weekend timetables on Saturday and Sunday, with Sunday timetables applying on Labour Day Monday. At Wellington Railway Station, replacement buses arrive at and depart from Platform 10.

Elsewhere, use the designated rail replacement bus stop for your station. Metlink's closure page links to stop locations for each line and explains how to find the replacement timetable. On the website, affected train trips are highlighted in pink; the linked bus timetable gives the replacement departure times.

For someone travelling to a shift or making a connection, the useful departure time is the one for the replacement bus. Allow extra time and check the actual boarding location before leaving home.

Check where to tag on and off

Greater Wellington says most rail replacement passengers should tag on and off onboard the bus. Wairarapa Line passengers use the station platform validators instead. In Greytown, the specified validator is outside 73 Main Street.

Off-peak fares apply throughout the long weekend. SuperGold passengers can travel free all day across Saturday, Sunday and the public holiday Monday. These are the published weekend arrangements; check the relevant service notice if your journey changes.

Why the lines are closed

The council describes line renewals, tunnel work and preparation for a new substation at Naenae. The power work supports future service improvements and the new battery electric Tūhono trains. The council places their introduction from 2029.

Metlink says long weekends are used because fewer passengers are travelling, allowing work that cannot take place while trains are operating. That explains the scheduling; passengers still need to allow for the slower or different journey on the day.

Before the return trip

Metlink lists regular rail timetables as resuming on Tuesday 27 October. Check the website or app for current alerts before relying on that planned restart.

Ordinary bus services use a Sunday timetable on Labour Day. The council says harbour ferries also use a Sunday timetable that day, while After Midnight buses run as usual on Friday and Saturday nights. For help planning a specific connection, Metlink lists 0800 801 700.
