For Lieutenant Waikie Wang, a helicopter flight begins with a question: which ships need a closer look?

The 25-year-old West Aucklander is an airborne tactical officer aboard HMNZS Te Mana. On a North Asia deployment, he helps monitor suspected attempts to evade sanctions against North Korea, the New Zealand Defence Force reported on 24 September 2026.

Wang uses information from a SH-2G(I) Seasprite helicopter’s sensors to assess vessel activity and coordinate with the frigate. His work includes looking for suspicious ship-to-ship transfers.

A former Kelston Boys’ High School student, he joined the Navy in 2020 and trained with No. 6 Squadron at Whenuapai. The squadron brings together Navy flight crews and Royal New Zealand Air Force ground crews.

The role depends on information moving between people as well as aircraft and ship. Wang described teamwork as central to deciding what matters during a flight.
