A 32-metre attraction is being considered for the waterfront, but a possible December opening remains conditional on approvals.
A proposed Ferris wheel on Auckland’s waterfront remains subject to consents and approvals, with Tātaki Auckland Unlimited considering it among activities for Quay Street Promenade this summer.
RNZ reported on 27 October that the 32-metre attraction had drawn support from city-centre business advocates and concerns from nearby residents about views and noise. The report quoted the agency’s destination director, Annie Dundas, saying December was a potential opening date, rather than a confirmed launch.
Skyline Attractions has applied to run the wheel for two years at the Queens Wharf Breastworks, east of the Ferry Building. Council documents reported by 1News describe 24 gondolas with capacity for 144 passengers, alongside a cultural centre, ticket booths and an ice-cream cart.
Auckland Council told 1News the application was lodged on 16 October. At the time of that 24 October report, it had not decided whether the application would be publicly notified.
The trial opening of the promenade is intended to inform longer-term waterfront planning, according to the statement from Dundas reported by RNZ.
The council’s wider Central Wharves work sets out ambitions for more public space, cultural activities and events, alongside better arrangements for cruise ships and ferries. Earlier public engagement attracted 335 pieces of feedback, with requests ranging from greenery and seating to family activities, food outlets and access to the water.
That engagement closed in May 2025 and concerned the wider waterfront plan, rather than consent for the proposed Ferris wheel.
